Galadimawa, Abuja, FCT, Nigeria

This project set out to pilot alternative materials and construction approaches for sustainable, low energy housing in peri-urban slums around Nigeria's capital. The full project budget was raised through online donations and sponsorship from local companies, and funded the construction of a single family unit built in rammed earth, timber and bamboo, working with young volunteers from Galadimawa throughout.

The design and material selection for the house means it can be kept cool without the need for additional mechanical cooling, and provides a toilet and rainwater harvesting tank so householders do not have to spend so much of their income on electricity or water, both utilities that are expensive and difficult to access in Nigeria. The provision of a toilet inside the house means householders do not have to share the communal facilities, where there are often 10 or more households using a single latrine.
