Warri, Delta State, Nigeria

The Appropriate Technology Enabled Development (ATED) Centre is both a project and a building which demonstrates and showcases appropriate construction technologies, including Hydraform blocks, timber frame, bamboo flooring, management of organic waste on site, and biogas and solar power technology.

The design also introduces new technologies to Nigeria, focussing on energy efficient construction for commercial clients. These technologies are particularly geared towards passive building design, and include insulated roof spaces, air tight windows, and air cooling systems which allow for optimum energy recovery in the building.

The construction process has been designed to allow community members, and local contractors to participate at every possible stage. In addition to leading the design and build, my role has been to facilitate participation of different community groups in the project, and to ensure that people understand the technologies and processes used in construction, and that they are accessible and replicable in other projects in the Niger Delta.

As the project aspires towards the highest achievable standards in environmentally sustainable design, the site master-planning includes provision for small-scale urban agriculture and aims to re-introduce various endangered indigenous plant species back into the local environment.

You can read more about the design here and energy efficiency measures here.
